My friend Yuri popped over with hubby Hiro and 2 year old Shosei. Hiro's left hand was heavily bandaged so I asked him what had happened.

Tanukis [狸] are Japanese racoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) They should be handled (if at all) with care - even if they are lying in a gutter near your place of work, injured and in need of veterinarian assistance. You have been warned.
